The Brown Lady

Updated: Mar 9, 2022

This photo of the Brown Lady was taken in 1936 but sightings of her have been reported since the early 1800s.

Believed to be Lady Dorothy Townshend, the wife of Charles Townshend. She passed away in 1726. Or did she?

Rumors said the funeral was fake. Charles had caught Dorothy having an affair. He locked her in the room in Raynham Hall (located in Norfolk, England) and left her there to die.

In the early 1800s, King George IV claims he saw her beside his bed while staying at Raynham Hall.

In 1835, Colonel Loftus said he saw her in a hallway twice on his visit to Raynham Hall. He described her as wearing a brown satin dress, her skin glowing, and appeared to have had her eyes gouged out.

Captain Fredrick Marryat was with 2 other men at Raynham Hall said they saw The Brown Lady. She was carrying a lantern. As she passed by them, she turned and smiled a menacing smile at them. Captain Fredrick shot at her and the bullet passed through her.

On a trip to Raynham Hall to take pictures for Country Living Magazine in 1936, Indre Shira saw something coming down the stairs and told Capta'n Provand to take a picture. Capta'n did not see anything and didn't know what the big fuss was until they developed this picture. It seems they had caught the legendary Brown Lady in a photo.
