On August 7 1994 in Oakville Washington, Officer David Lacey was on patrol. At 3:00 am It started to rain. Officer Lacey turned on his windshield wipers and realized this was no ordinary rain. Later that morning Dottie Hearn went outside and saw what she thought was hail but upon touching it she quickly realized she was wrong. What Officer Lacey and Dottie found was a Gelatinous Goo. The blobs would fall 6 more times in the next 3 weeks.
“We turned our windshield wipers on, and it just started smearing to the point where we could almost not see. The substance was very mushy, almost like if you had Jello in your hand. You know, you could pretty much squish it through your fingers” Office Lacey explained. Officer Lacey would later be the first person to become sick with a flu-like illness after being in contact with the blobs.
Resident Beverly Roberts stated “Everybody in the town came down with something like the Flu, only it was a really hard Flu that lasted from seven-week to two or three months.
The symptoms of those who came into contact with the blobs were problematic breathing, vertigo, blurred vision, and nausea. Many animals who came into contact with the substance died.
Dottie Hearn picked up a blob believing it to be hail. Dottie, just hours later, became very ill, began to vomit, and collapsed. Dottie’s daughter Sunny Barclift, found her mother and took her to the hospital. Dottie was diagnosed with an inner ear problem. Sunny collected a sample of the blob and took it to the health department. Dottie would later send another sample to an independent lab.
Mike McDowell was a microbiologist with the Washington Department of Health when the samples came in. “We found 2 organisms, Pseudomonas Fluorescens and Enterobacter Cloacae. These organisms could lead to severe illness.” Pseudomonas Fluorescens is a bacterium found in animals. Enterobacter Cloacae is a pathogen found in the gastrointestinal tract.
Then according to Mike McDowell, the sample disappeared. “I came in, and the material was not where it was supposed to be. I asked management ‘what happened to it?’ and the exact words were ‘Do not ask’. This material and I have no proof one way or the other, was manufactured by someone for some purpose, and for some reason, Oakville was chosen as the test site.’
The Washington Department of Health claims to have no record of any samples taken.
The private lab that Dottie Hearn sent a sample to stated the blobs were made of Eukaryotic Cells. These cells are found in plants and animals. The sample was also rumored to contain white blood cells.
So what caused these blobs to fall from the sky for 3 weeks, only in Oakville?
Theory #1: The military had been performing bombing exercises 50 miles away in the ocean. These exercises vaporized Jellyfish and caused their remains to rain down on the town. This would account for the animal cells found in the sample and the gelatin-like consistency of the rain.
Theory #2: Biological Warfare testing by the military. Oakville is a town of only 700 residents. A small town would make it easier to track the illness spread from the blobs.
Theory#3: It was waste dumped from a passing aircraft. The FAA denies this claim stating their waste would be dyed blue.
We will probably never know what this substance was. The samples disappeared and the Department of Health claims they never existed. The unknown details of the Blobs have put them at Cryptid Status. However, there is also one more possibility:
